Carles Puyol Steps Aside for Eric Abidal

Who said chivalry was extinct?

It was determined that Eric Abidal’s life and career were at risk when he underwent liver surgery in 2011 to remove a tumour.

In the 2011 Champions League final against Manchester United, Abidal was handed the captain’s armband after an incredible comeback.

In front of a jubilant crowd, Abidal was the first player to raise the trophy after Barcelona’s victory.

It’s a very inspirng tale of perseverance and a never-say-die mentality.

Best Uefa Games

Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich (1998-99 Final)

After a tumultuous ride to the final, Manchester United’s comeback against Bayern Munich in 1999 was equal to, if not greater.

The 1999 Champions League crescendo is remembered as one of the best game ever played, not just in Europe, but in football in general.

Mario Basler scored on six minutes with a wonderfully curled free kick from outside the United area, setting the tone for the rest of the first half. The Red Devils struggled to produce chances, while the Germans were unlucky not to extend their lead, often challenging Peter Schmeichel.

With four minutes of injury time remaining, the Germans failed to clear a David Beckham corner, and Teddy Sheringham swept Manchester United level.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer, another late substitute, capitalised on another corner to slam the ball into the roof of Oliver Kahn’s net at 92:17.

Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan (2004-05 Final)

Paolo Maldini became the Champions League’s oldest ever goalscorer after volleying in an Andrea Pirlo free kick in the opening minute.

While both teams had their share of scoring chances, Milan had the better ones, even getting as far as beating Jerzy Dudek when Andriy Shevchenko was adjudged to be offside.

An attack led by Kaka and Hernan Crespo was causing problems for Liverpool, and in the space of 5 minutes, Crespo scored twice.

As soon as the second half began, the English side had erased the Rossoneri’s lead to zero.

If it hadn’t been for Liverpool’s team captain Steven Gerrard, who restored parity before Milan substitute Vladimir micer scored on Dida to make it 3-2 at halftime?

While Jerzy Dudek’s Liverpool teammates were beginning to tire after a 120-minute slugfest in Istanbul, the deadlock would go into extra time.

In the penalty shootout, referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez announced the conclusion of extra time, which meant that the trophy’s next home game would be chosen by penalty kicks.

This was the best Champions League game ever, despite the fact that Liverpool seemed to be on the verge of defeat at half time.

When penalties came, Liverpool won it even though by half time they seemed down and out, making this the best game in Uefa Champions League history.
