Rio Ferdinand said Trent Alexander-Arnold will ‘go down as one of the best right-backs we’ve ever seen’ and ‘break all records’ after he starred in Liverpool’s victory over Rangers.

Liverpool cruised to a confidence-building win at Anfield on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Alexander-Arnold, who has come in for criticism this season, gave Liverpool an early lead after beating Allan McGregor from 25 yards with a superb free-kick.

Salah put the game to bed shortly after half-time with an emphatic penalty after Luis Diaz was brought down in the box.

Liverpool have now amassed six points from their three Champions League games this season, although Napoli remain top of Group A on nine points having thrashed Ajax 6-1 this evening.

Manchester United legend Ferdinand singled out Alexander-Arnold for praise after Liverpool’s much-needed victory over Rangers.

He told BT Sport: ‘Listen, he’s going to go down as one of the best right-backs we’ve ever seen in England. He’s going to break all the records in terms of assists and goals [from a right-back].

‘Him and [Chelsea star] Reece James will go close together throughout their careers.

‘I’ve had some time with Trent and one thing he doesn’t lack is character and personality. This kid wants to be the best, he asks all the right questions about winning and sustaining performances at the top.

‘He’s got the taste of winning at Liverpool, he’s not going to let that slip.’

Liverpool have struggled for form this season, winning just two of their seven league fixtures to slip to ninth in the English top-flight.

But Ferdinand was impressed with the Reds’ display against Scottish giants Rangers, adding: ‘Back to what we know, what we normally see, from a Liverpool team.

‘The energy, the intensity, aggressive, on the front foot, trying to win the ball high and early. All of those things were in play today.

‘You can see from the reaction of the manager, of the players, they wanted that, they needed that.

‘The manager got everything that he would have wanted from this game: a clean sheet, a couple of goals, and a team that looked like they had confidence back.’

Klopp also praised his side after they won their second Champions League game of the season.

‘It was exactly what we needed tonight,’ the German boss said. ‘A new formation, we had to change things.

‘We had plenty of chances, imagine if we had taken more of them. But a really good game and a very important win.

‘We were unlucky in moments offensively, rock solid defensively apart from the very end. But it will be a different game next week [when Liverpool visit Rangers].’
