Gary Neville says it would ‘scare him to death’ if sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain and has urged them not to do it.
The Brazil international has been linked with a sensational transfer to ’s side with the club’s Saudi owners keen to bring in a superstar name.
signed Neymar from Barcelona in a world-record £200m move in 2017 and the 31-year-old has registered 118 goals and 77 assists across 173 games.
He in under contract until 2025 but the French side are rumoured to be considering a squad overhaul as part of a major rebuild.
‘That would scare me to death, that sort of signing,’ Neville said on his official .
‘Neymar is a sensational player but Eddie Howe would have a sort of circus. Eddie Howe doesn’t need a circus up here.
‘You think about what Newcastle are at this moment in time, they’re building, they have foundations. What you don’t want to do is disrupt that, the fans are right behind the team.
‘There’s a spirit building, the atmosphere was electric in the first 10 minutes.
‘They are going to need to do it at some point and go for the big name signings and be brave at a point and say let’s do it.
‘But if they are a 25 or 26 year-old for £100 million that sort of player is likely to go somewhere else in Europe at this moment in time so you might end up getting offered a 32-year-old and Eddie might think, well, no. Eddie and Dan Ashworth are going to have to be strong with the ownership.’
