Arjen Robben announced his second and final retirement from football at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The Dutchman originally retired in 2019 but decided to come back to play for boyhood side, FC Groningen.

But, after appearing just seven times in 2020/21, he decided to hang up his boots for good.

Robben established himself as one of the best wingers of the 21st century during a long and successful football career.

Now 38, you can forgive him for letting himself go and enjoy his retirement.

However, Robben is determined to keep fit and look after himself.

This weekend, Robben completed his first ever marathon.

The former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich star went through the pain barrier to complete the Rotterdam Marathon on Saturday.

He performed well as he crossed the finish line in 3 hours and 14 minutes, a very respectable time.

Robben started off like a train as he came racing out of the blocks.

He was on for an in incredible time around the 30km mark but slowed considerably in the remaining 12km.

Robben could be seen struggling but battled through the pain to cross the line.

According to the Daily Mail, Robben ran at an average speed of 8.121mph and completed a mile every 7 minutes 22 seconds.

His gender position was 1,280 out of 9,187, while his age position was 268 out of 1,313.

Robben was relieved after crossing the line but admitted he did not enjoy the experience.

Robben told Rijnmond, per Goal: “It really wasn’t fun. I made it, but that’s about it.

“I often went deep and had to fight often enough, but this was also a real fight. That audience on the side helps you so much. Thanks to everyone for that – that got me through.

“In the beginning, I was a bit preoccupied with a time – but at a certain point you throw that overboard.

“Then it’s surviving [after] entering my first marathon. Then you notice what something like that does to your body, but I made it.”
