Two high school baseball players who were cousins were shot in Santa Ana, California, and one of them has died.

The Thursday night incident has prompted a search for the shooter.

Both Century High School baseball players were sitting in a car just before 7.30pm on the 1400 block of South Minnie Street when a suspect on foot approached and shot at them, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

Cops arriving at the scene in an alley found a man with gunshot wounds in his upper torso, stated the police department, according to . He was unresponsive. Another man had a gunshot wound in his upper body.

Both victims were taken to a hospital.

Roberto Izelo, 18, was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the Orange County coroner’s office. His 19-year-old cousin, who has not been identified, is in stable condition.

Police released a short video showing the suspect wearing a dark-colored sweater or jacket and clothing and walking in a parking lot. They did not provide a detailed description of the suspect.

‘The circumstances or motive surrounding the shooting are currently being investigated,’ the police department stated.

Detectives are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

Santa Ana Unified School District stated that its community is ‘deeply saddened by the death of a student’ who was a senior.

‘We offer our most sincere condolences to the student’s family. Crisis counselors have also been sent to support any students and staff at the school dealing with this loss,’ the statement read.

‘Our thoughts are with the Century High School community, and we ask that you kindly respect the privacy of the family and school.’

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Santa Ana Police Department. The case is eligible for the Gang Homicide Reward Program offering $1million for information leading to the arrest of gang homicide suspects.
