Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has returned to the Premier League after signing a short-term contract with .

The 29-year-old had been a Reds player from 2016 until earlier this summer when his contract expired at Anfield.

The German had not played for Liverpool since 2018 and had since been on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin, returning to Anfield last season, but not being involved in the first team.

Karius has made a swift return to the Premier League and is filling a gap that has emerged in Eddie Howe’s Newcastle squad.

Nick Pope has arrived as first choice goalkeeper at St James’ Park, but Martin Dubravka has moved to Manchester United this summer. That left just Karl Darlow as back-up and he has suffered an ankle injury.

The club confirms that Darlow is not expected to be out long-term, but Karius has been brought in to provide cover for Pope.

Howe said: ‘We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group.

‘He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.’

Karius said: ‘I’m excited. It’s a good opportunity for me and a great project to be part of. It didn’t take me long to make a decision.

‘Newcastle have a great coach and play really attractive football. I felt it was the right project for me and I’m excited to work with the coaches and my new teammates.’

Karius last played for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final when the Reds were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid and the ‘keeper was blamed for two of the goals conceded.

Reports after the match stated that he had suffered a concussion during the match, which Jurgen Klopp said was the reason for his poor performance, although he never returned to the first team after the signing of Alisson Becker that summer.
