Cristiano Ronaldo likely to miss start of new season with Man Utd still in the dark over his future

Ronaldo did has still not returned to the club for having missed the tour of Asia and Australia due to ‘family reasons’ with agent Jorge Mendes currently trying to engineer a move away from the club.

United have accepted Ronaldo’s absence on compassionate grounds but according to , their patience is now beginning to wear thin.

United are back in Manchester following their tour and take on and Rayo Vallecano in their final pre-season games before beginning their Premier League campaign against Brighton on 7 August.

The report adds that it is unlikely that Ronaldo will be available for that game with the Portuguese still to train under new manager Erik ten Hag or his teammates this summer.

Anthony Martial has enjoyed a superb pre-season in Ronaldo’s absence and is expected to lead the line when United begin their new season in two weeks.

Atletico Madrid meanwhile have emerged as a possible destination for the veteran striker.

Ronaldo is said to be willing to take a pay cut, currently earning around £500,000-a-week but the La Liga side still need to offload players in order to fund the move.

According to The Times, Ronaldo has been ‘impressed’ with the attempt made by Atletico manager Diego Simeone to sign him, while the star forward is said to be keen on the move, even if it could go some way to tarnishing his golden Real Madrid legacy.

Ronaldo spent the peak years of his career with the current Champions League holders and is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.

A number of top European sides have turned down the chance to sign Ronaldo this summer including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Ronaldo has also been linked with a return to Sporting CP, his first professional club, although reports of talks over a return was dismissed as ‘fake news’ by the player on social media.
