are planning fresh talks with Tim Steidten to discuss the vacant Sporting Director role at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are seeking to restructure at board level after Todd Boehly took on the role at an interim level during the summer transfer window.
The club had hoped to appoint Christoph Freund from RB Salzburg but the Austrian rejected the chance to move to west .
That’s seen Chelsea widen their search for a new candidate and they’re now keen to speak to Steidten.
Steidten, 43, was appointed as Bayer Leverkusen’s squad planner in 2019 and he was promoted to the club’s sporting director last summer.
The 43-year-old’s speciality is his data analysis and that’s what led the Germans into the season-long signing of Callum Hudson-Odoi last summer.
Steidten would be expected to work with Graham Potter to identify targets in areas of the squad that need strengthening, with the pair working alongside recruitment analyst Kyle Macaulay.
Macaulay joined the Blues alongside Potter and he’s said to have made a good impression since leaving Brighton.
Boehly’s first summer in charge of the club has been fraught with change as the likes of Marina Granovskaia, Petr Cech and Bruce Buck departed.
