Former captain Ashley Young has tipped Anthony Martial for a big season after praising his performances in .

Martial had looked set to leave Old Trafford this summer after struggling massively over the previous two seasons with form and injuries, and with Erik ten Hag overhauling his squad, he looked destined for the chopping block.

Last campaign, the 26-year-old scored just once in 11 games for United before heading to Sevilla on loan where he again would net just one goal in 12 matches.

However, he was included in the Red Devils’ pre-season tour and with wantaway forward not travelling to Asia and Australia, the France international has started every game in the striker role.

And he has made the most of this opportunity, scoring three goals and looking very impressive in the wins over Liverpool, Melbourne Victory, and Crystal Palace, leading some to suggest that he is now an integral part of Ten Hag’s plans.

Young certainly thinks so, with the Aston Villa man telling Martial as much on Instagram after Villa drew 2-2 with United on Saturday in Perth.

The former United skipper, who wore the armband for Villa during the match, initially posted: ‘End of the tour. Thanks Australia we’ve enjoyed nearly every minute. Nice to lead this team again.’

Martial responded with: ‘My bro,’ before Young replied: ‘Was good to see you my bro and thanks for your shirt, good luck for the season bro and it’s about time you occupied that No9 shirt.’

Martial joined United in 2015 from Monaco for £54million, a then-record-breaking transfer fee for a teenager but has only hit double-figures for goals in the Premier League in three out of the seven seasons he has spent in Manchester.

23 goals in all competitions in 2019/20, suggested that he had finally found his rhythm, but it’s been all downhill since then, although Ten Hag appears to be getting the best out of him again.
