Top figures have amid fears Americans could be stripped of their nationwide right to have an abortion.

Hillary Clinton has warned ‘women will be and subjugated’ after a bombshell opinion draft .

In a statement on Twitter, the former presidential candidate said the news was ‘not surprising but still outrageous’.

‘This decision is a direct assault on the dignity, rights, & lives of women, not to mention decades of settled law’, she said.

‘It will kill and subjugate women even as a vast majority of Americans think abortion should be legal. What an utter disgrace.’

She was joined by other Democrat politicians in blasting the rumoured proposal, which would allow individual states to .

Abortion will likely become illegal in at least half of all US states if Roe v Wade is overturned, according to pro-reproductive rights group The Guttmacher Institute.

In a joint statement, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: ‘If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans.

‘The Republican-appointed Justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history.’

Senator Elizabeth Warren, who was briefly considered the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in late 2019, has accused the ‘extremist’ Supreme Court of imposing its ‘far-right, unpopular views on the entire country’.

Meanwhile, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed abortion law was only the beginning, saying: ‘As we’ve warned, SCOTUS isn’t just coming for abortion – they’re coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights.’

Hours after the new report emerged, President Joe Biden is yet to comment – but said in 2019 ‘Roe v. Wade is the law of the land, and we must fight any and all attempts to overturn’.

There are calls for him to deliver on his promise to convert Roe v Wade into law, as he stated in the run-up to the presidential elections.

It is unclear if the draft opinion would mark the court’s final word on the issue and a Supreme Court spokeswoman refused to comment.

Boris Johnson and other British lawmakers have thrown their backing behind abortion rights, with a spokesperson for the PM saying: ‘My understanding is this comes from a document rather than an official decision and of course, as you’d expect, it’s a matter for the U.S. courts in general.

‘The UK fully supports women’s reproductive rights globally … including the right to access safe and legal abortion.’

Some Republican officials have made it clear they support the potential Supreme Court move, with Senator Tom Cotton saying he ‘prays the court follows the constitution and allows the states to once again protect unborn life’.

Senator Josh Hawley has blasted the source of the leak, claiming the ‘unprecedented breach of confidentiality was clearly meant to intimidate’.
