Drive-by shooting during high school graduation party kills one and injures seven

A drive-by shooting at a high school graduation party one woman and injured seven other people, police said.

It was one of several shootings over the weekend to rock the US, including one in Philadelphia that left three people dead and 11 injured and one in Tennessee in which three people were and an additional 14 were injured.

About 150 people were at the graduation celebration near Summerton, South Carolina when the shooting began around 11pm Saturday evening, according to Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley.

The shooting may have been gang related, Baxley said. It’s unclear whether any of the victims had been specifically targeted in the attack.

Investigators have not yet determined ‘if shots were fired at specific persons or randomly into the crowd,’ the sheriff’s office said in a post to Facebook.

The woman who was fatally shot has been identified as 32-year-old Audrionna Kind, officials said. She had been airlifted to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. Officials said she was a mother of four whose children attended class in the Clarendon School District..

Most of those wounded in the shooting were teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17. Two other victims were ages 12 and 36. Police have not shared the conditions of the surviving victims.

‘It is not clear, as of yet, if some of these rounds may have been from return fire from some of the subjects at the party,’ the sheriff’s office said.

Two vehicles reportedly drove up to the outdoor gathering before opening gunfire.

The drive-by suspects fled the scene after the incident, and the sheriff’s office is seeking information on the case.

“These acts of violence cannot continue,’ the sheriff’s office said in a statement. ‘Innocent children and adults are suffering the consequences of these acts.’
