A Texas man was arrested on Wednesday after authorities discovered the remains of his son, who died in 2018, were on display in his kitchen.

David McMichael, 67, was charged with abuse of a corpse, New Boston Police said in a shared to Facebook.

Police arrived at McMichael’s New Boston home, located about 150 miles northeast of Dallas, to perform a wellness check on Tuesday. The wellness check was reportedly called by a family member who lives out of state for Jason McMichael, the deceased son.

When authorities asked McMichael if he knew why they were there, he reportedly replied that it was because there was a body in his kitchen.

‘He was asked by Officers on scene if he knew why they were there,’ police wrote on Facebook. ‘Mr McMichael advised them it was because he had a body in his kitchen.’

He told officers it was the body of his adult son who had died in May of 2018, according to police.

‘The officers on scene made entry into the home and found the skeletal remains of a male,’ according to the police statement.

Investigators believe the body was that of a male, possibly Jason McMichael. Police have not shared how old the son would have been when he died, if the remains are proven to belong to him.

New Boston’s Public Affairs Officer Katie Jimenez told KETK that David McMichael was very cooperative with officers when they arrived to search his house.

‘He seemed to be very accommodating, let them in, told them what was going on and they arrested him. He is currently in the Bi-State jail charged with abuse of corpse. The body has been there since May of 2018,’ Jimenez told the tv station.

The family of David and Jason McMichael have reportedly asked for privacy during this difficult time, saying in a statement: ‘Right now, things are insane at the moment, and it seems to keep continually getting even worse.’

The Texarkana Crime Scene unit arrived to process the scene of the incident and entered the home after receiving a search warrant signed by a District Judge.

After officials examined the corpse, the skeletal remains were taken to the South Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy and further identification.

David McMichael was taken into custody without issue. He is currently held in jail in Texarkana, Texas.
