An Atlanta mother was shot by a police officer after she brought a handgun to a high school and waved it at students, police in Georgia said.

The parent, 30-year-old Tierra Vachon, arrived at Booker T. Washington High School’s campus after a fight broke out among students after school around 4.30pm on Wednesday.

A physical altercation between students erupted during dismissal, causing the mother to come to campus with a weapon, Atlanta Public Schools said in a statement.

‘A parent came to the campus with a weapon and began waving it in the direction of students, employees and an Atlanta Public Schools Police Officer. The officer ordered the parent to drop the weapon. When the parent did not comply with the order, the officer fired one shot which struck the parent in the hand,” the district said.

The mother had reportedly gone to the school to defend her daughter, who had been involved in an altercation that had spilled over into her yard, reported.

‘Some girls came over and jumped by girls, that’s how everything stated,’ the mother told the station. ‘They were fighting in my yard, jumping my children.’

When the mother refused to drop her weapon she was shot by a school police officer, authorities said.

She was treated at the scene and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. She was the only person injured and is currently in stable condition.

The school district says they are probing the incident.

‘APS Police is conducting a full investigation of the incident, and the parent faces several charges,’ the district said in a release.

Atlanta Public Schools police charged the mother with six offenses: obstructing a law enforcement officer with violence, carrying/possession of firearm on school property, aggravated assault and contributing to delinquency of a minor.

‘As this was an officer involved shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating as well. The safety and well-being of our students and employees is always a top priority for all Atlanta Public Schools,’ the district said.
